History Of JSMS Hostel

In about the year 1939, the then Trustees of the Jaffer Suleman Trust realized that the Muslim community was lagging behind the other communities in the educational field. It was observed that there were hardly any facilities for students coming to Mumbai from different parts of India particularly from rural areas for higher education. Mr. Abdul Sattar Oomer had the initiative and took upon himself to construct an exclusive new Hostel building. Accordingly the foundation stone of the building was laid by Dr. Zakir Hussain, the then Vice President of India on 20th September 1964. The new building consisting of five storeys with a hall for cultural functions was completed in about two years. From a capacity of about 50 students, the hostel now accommodates 400 students.

It is one of the biggest hostels of its kind in Mumbai providing hostel accommodation to students attending diverse academic courses in various educational and technical institutions and colleges. The hostel has all modern amenities like electric fans, hot water, telephone facilities, water coolers, purified drinking water, laundry, tuck shop, reading room, Internet, etc.

There are other recreation facilities such as carom, chess, table tennis, etc., and outdoor games like cricket. With great pride, it can be said that some of the ex-hostelites have excelled themselves in various fields in India and abroad.

The hostel is under the charge and control of a Superintendent, Mr. S. A. Gafoor.
